Join us as we explore the philosophers referenced in lost, including John Locke (pictured), David Hume and Michael Bakunin. We'll be reading three chapters from Maurice Cranston's Political Dialogues (1968):

A DIALOGUE ON TOLERATION between John Locke and the Third Earl of Shaftesbury

A DIALOGUE ON MORALITY between Voltaire and David Hume

A DIALOGUE ON ANARCHISM between Karl Marx and Michael Bakunin

The dialogues were created by Cranston, but are solidly based on the works on these philosophers in a thought-experiment of what-if-these-thinkers-had-debated-each-other.

Cranston's book is out of print, but there are currently 2 used copies on Amazon and more on Advanced Book Exchange and it can be purchased from Questia online. Public and university libraries usually have the book as well.

Hope to see you at this meetup!

Someone asked for POLITICAL DIALOGUES at the Strand, and was told that it was "sold out". How many of us ARE there?

See http://www.youtube.com/watc... to hear Against All Authority, er, sing "Bakunin". (Every copy of the lyrics a search turns up begins "He was a repentant nobel man..." He got tired of working in the dynamite factory? And dumped it on Black Rock?)

    •  I wish the writers of LOST had been referencing particular ideas in naming their characters after great philosophers... but I guess they are just playing with us and making us read things like Political Dialogues. A good read nonetheless!
